Regex Explainer with Claude
A small skill that takes any regex and returns the english-language explanation, anchored examples, and the failure modes — the regex documentation you would write if you had time.
Overview
Turn cryptic regular expressions into plain English using Claude. A step-by-step recipe for building a regex explainer that breaks down patterns character by character.
What You'll Build
A workflow that takes any regex and produces:
- A plain-English description of what the regex does
- A step-by-step breakdown of each token
- An annotated example with capture groups highlighted
- Common pitfalls and edge cases
Ingredients
- A regex you want explained
- Claude Desktop or Claude Code
- 10–15 minutes
Steps
Step 1 — Paste the regex
Start a new Claude conversation and paste the regex you want explained.
Step 2 — Ask for the breakdown
Use this prompt template:
Explain this regex in plain English. Break down every token:
REGEX_HERE
For each token, tell me:
1. What it means
2. What it matches
3. What could go wrong
Then give me a real-world example with capture groups highlighted.
Step 3 — Iterate on edge cases
Ask Claude to identify strings that would match unexpectedly, or strings that look like they should match but don't.
Step 4 — Save as a reusable skill
Turn the prompt into a Claude skill so you can explain any regex with one command.
When to Use
- Reviewing inherited code with mysterious regex
- Writing new regex and sanity-checking before commit
- Teaching teammates how a particular pattern works
- Documenting APIs that accept regex-based filters
